I recently had a conversation with a young man about feminism and why we should all be feminists. Chimamanda has a really simple book titled “We Should All Be Feminists” which spells things out nicely (you should read it 😊).
After our rather long chat, I realised that there are some really strong misconceptions about the entire ‘movement’ and as a result, there is some sort of fear that people have of being tagged ‘feminist’.
To be honest, I am amazed at the lengths some people would go to dissociate themselves from feminism because they do not want to be perceived a certain way… 😆Now I get that, for whatever reason, everyone has their own definition of feminism and some of the definitions are ‘some way’. However, feminism is not a fight between the genders; it is a fight against the ‘system’ that, sometimes unintentionally, insists on keeping women in a certain ‘box’. It is a fight against the mindset that a woman ‘needs to know her place’ especially when this place is in some sort of unfavourable position.
It is a fight against the mindset that your 10 year old daughter should wash your 12 year old son’s dishes and do his laundry, not because he is somehow incapable, but because he is a ‘man’.
It is a fight against the very-subtle things we see around us daily which imply that women are not ‘quite there’ and many, many more…If in your everyday life, you experience none of the above or are blessed to be in an environment where women are treated fairly and equally all the time (and I doubt that), then good for you!!!
But please do not discount the experiences of the many women who are frustrated on a daily basis by unfavourable circumstances simply because of their gender.
And please do not impose your views on how feminism should be practiced or on what feminists should focus their energies.
Just strive to do better, and to be better, in ensuring some amount of fairness to all in as much as it depends on you.One day, I will write in detail why I am the strong feminist that I am and why I think we all should be feminists.#pleaseeducateyourself

Naa Okailey Adamafio-Manteau had this piece on her Facebook timeline and I simply had to seek permission to publish on the blog. Her post on feminism was apt! and we hope with time these misconceived perceptions change.
Her book on feminism will soon be out! 😅 If this is just a snippet you can imagine the goody that will be in the book 😀.
